Monday Musings
NEW ORLEANS FLOODED AND NO ONE CARED. A little over a week ago, half a million Black women descended upon the Crescent City for Essence Festival. A day later, New Orleans flooded and there was no media coverage. I didn't get an alert on my phone until days after. Here's what's going on during New Orleans' hurricane season and how climate change has had a major effect.
HALLE BAILEY IS GOING TO SLAY THE LITTLE MERMAID. GET OVER IT. There's a large sector of White America that is upset about Halle Bailey being casted as the live-action Little Mermaid and it begs the question - isn't it an issue that there were little-to-no brown characters in folktales when we grew up? Shouldn't characters change to reflect the diversity of the children the story is for? Brooke Newman of the Washington Post thinks so.
ODELL BECKHAM JUST GOT FINER AND I CAN'T DEAL. The title of this Buzzfeed article says it all.
MEGAN THEE STALLION AND "HOT GIRL SUMMER" IS THE SAVIOR WE DIDN'T KNOW WE NEEDED. I don't know about you, but I've been screaming "Hot Girl Summer" since June 21. It's all in jest, but it properly encapsulates everything I'm trying to do right now (edit: I'm trying to live my best life). Thank you, Megan Thee Stallion for all that you do *bows head*
I MET ICONS. ESSENCE FESTIVAL WAS AMAZING. 2019 Essence Festival was one for the books, and of the three years I've been this is the year I didn't go as crazy. I'm usually running around from press junket to party, but with an average temperature of 105 degrees I didn't have a choice but to sit and take time to reflect and be intentional with everything I did. I was so in-tune with myself this time around, it all culminated into moments like meeting Iman and Tina Knowles and having Raphael Saadiq sing in my face in a pink living room. Essence Festival 2019 was sick.
