Repurposing Your Closet

As a fashionista, it's kind of my job to go shopping. It's lovely until you a) can't fit any more into your tiny NYC closet and b) run out of money. So lately I've been digging deep into my closet to find new ways to wear old things. "Repurposing Your Closet" is my spring cleaning mantra this year, and when I found this old trench dress resting in the back of my wardrobe I knew it'd be my first experiment.

I've had this Eloquii trench coat for well over a year. I've literally worn it once. The straps were too long so they kept sliding off, and I didn't love the length of it as a dress considering the material it was made of. I either wanted it as a mini skirt or a maxi dress (à la Priyanka Chopra in the Ralph Lauren trench coat dress at Met Gala 2017). So in my closet it stayed.

My first order of business was to chop off the one thing that didn't work on this dress - the straps. They were cumbersome and honestly, you know how much I love an off the shoulder moment. Instantly upped the chic factor. Next I switched out the belt for an actual belt to give this piece more structure. plus size trench coat dressplus size trench coat dressplus size trench coat dress

The last, but most important part of all of this, is giving this piece dual purpose. It's now a dress and a topper. I paired with my one of my favorite dark denim for a classic trench-on-denim look.

Now I'm ready to rework some other pieces in my wardrobe! What are some of your favorite ways to repurpose your closet? Share in the comments!
